Deconstruction of pop video

In this screenshot the rapper is portrayed as a man of authority. We see this through his upright posture, smart suit and stick in his left hand. He is sitting on a throne which suggests that he some sort of royalty within the music video. The wide shot allows us to see the palace behind him which again reassures the viewer that the rapper is of authority. The glasses on the rappers face also portrays authority. As he is of a high status, if you are not on his level you are not allowed to look him right in the face.

Here we see the singer being put down like she is a toy. This shows that the rapper is in control of the singer and she is not able to do anything without his assistance. This connotes that the singer has no authority or freedom within the music video. He is able to put her where he feels to. This conforms to feminine mystique as it shows the oppression towards women. The wide shot additionally allows us to see the scenery cleary in order for us to know where the video is taking place.

This image if provocative as it shows her tongue as the core of pleasure. The ice cream is being used in a raunchy way to imitate a sex act.  Her big eyes make her look as if she is innocent. The juxtaposition is shown through the action she is doing and the innocent look on her face. Again, this image is conforming to the male gaze as it is appealing to men due to the action she is doing with her tongue. This could be used to attract males and make them think she is innocent.

Here we see a lady trapped in a bubble. This shows that within the video the women have no freedom and the only person who is going to save them is Katy Perry. The colour pink connotes that they are candy and can be eaten. Her facial expression signifies sadness as she wants to be freed. Once again, this screenshot conforms to the feminine mystique as the lady is trapped in the bubble. This connotes that she is not important and has no status. 

This screenshot shows that the women are righteous and have to stick together in order to stand up to the rapper. They are positioned in an army layout which shows that they are ready to fight. Their facial expressions show determination and fierceness which young ladies can relate to. However, their clothing is still provocative as they are half naked. The wide shot allows us to see all the women as well as the background behind them. It sets the scenery and allows the viewer to understand the theme of the video. The costumes in which the ladies are wearing conforms to the male gaze as they are being sexualised in order to appeal to the male eye.

 

This image is very sexy yet provocative. The pop singer is naked lying on a cloud of candy floss to hide her personal assets. The viewer is teased by being able to see her right bum check and cleavage area. This connotes that women are sexy and strong and can get what they want by using their female assets to persuade men. The wide shot is effective here as the viewer is able to see the stars entire body. This screenshot conforms strongly to the male gaze as the pop star is half naked and giving the male viewers permission to think about her in anyway they please.
 

 

This screenshot shows yet another female being trapped. She is trapped in a jelly cube and the only way she can be rescued is by the pop star. As the pop star goes to rescue the female it shows the viewer that ladies have to stick together in order to win the fight to freedom. The trapped lady has her arm reaching towards Katy as a try for help. We can clearly see that the feminine mystique is a theory which relates to this video through out. As the star makes her way around the candy palace she is met with women who are trapped in any type of candy and it is her mission to free them. The animation within the video makes it's theme look realistic which the viewers want. The want to be brought to a fantasy world for the duration of the video.

Yet again, another provocative image showing the sexiness of women. This screenshot shows that women can be sexy whilst fighting for their rights/freedom. It also shows flirty behaviour between the girls and the rapper as they use their feminine wiles. The close up allows us to see her facial expression clearly and the action she is doing. The screenshot conforms to the male gaze as she is half naked and is bending with her hands on her bum. The colour red connotes: fierceness, love and bold, yet, sadness and pain. There could be a relation to the two in which she was trapped before therefore was sad however is not vixtorious and felling confident.

 

The second to last image shows the rapper as the king of the castle overlooking the females in his palace. His stick shows he is of authority and high position. From the over shoulder shot we can see the palace which is made of candy. This makes the viewer escape to a fantasy world and forget about reality for a few minutes. The over the shoulder view is very effective as the viewer is able to see what the rapper is over looking. From this camera view it is clear that he is watching the ladies is the palace whilst still maintaing his authorititive status.

The final wide camera shots shows the righteousness of women. They are standing in an army position and show fierceness. This image shows that the pop star is now in control of hers and the others destiny. The are still conforming to the male girls however the female gaze also. They are appealing to women as they are portryaing women sticking together and looking sexy whilst doing it.
